Ask Steve – EP 9 – Why do I have to have KPI’s
Hello everybody! Steve here from Recruitment School and welcome to another episode of Ask Steve.
Today we have a question from Liz. Liz is in Sydney and she has asked the question. Why do I need to have KPI’s?
What I’m assuming here you’re asking Liz is you’re getting managed against your KPIs and you’re not happy about it and therefore why do I need to have them? And you’re probably looking for some backup from me so you can take it to your boss and say hey, Steve from Recruitment School said we don’t actually need to have them. Well I’m gonna go against that unfortunately. I’m with your boss or whoever it is and assuming that’s what you’re trying to do. This isn’t gonna work today because I am all for KPI’s
Now the problem with KPI’s Liz and the problem with a lot of people is. They don’t know how to use KPI’s. So what I’m going to do today Liz is I’m gonna talk to you about How you can use your KPI’s? You see KPI’s your friend and I know so many people sit back and they look at them and go I hate them. Why do I need them? I keep on getting managed by them but then my boss doesn’t know what it’s like and if only you knew and managed by them but then my boss doesn’t know what it’s like and if only you knew and I can tell you right now. We’ve all been there. We’ve all been there. And as you get further and further and further further up the tree the KPI’s become harder and harder and they become more serious and they become well the ramifications of when you don’t hit them are a lot more serious than where you’re at at the moment.
So what I’m going to do here today Liz is talk to you through how to use your KPIs. You see if KPIs have been set correctly they are your roadmap to success. What that basically means Liz is? If you follow the KPIs and you hit those KPIs then the majority of time are set again I’m assuming that they’ve been set correctly the majority of times you will be successful and it’s that simple. What you need to do is to figure out how you’re going to execute your KPIs and hit them on an ongoing basis so that you can become successful. Because I’m assuming that you you’re not doing this to not be successful.
I mean why would you put yourself through all the pain if you didn’t wanna be successful. I’m assuming that you wanna be successfully. So find out what your KPIs are and go and hammer them. Seriously, there may be some that you don’t like, like business development, new business development calls. Everybody seems to have a problem with the best way to tackle that as somebody said to me once in one of my coaching calls. Eat the frog first. What that basically means is? Do the stuff you don’t wanna do first get it over and done with. Do more of it than you’ve been asked to do so if you’ve been asked to make 10 BD calls. New business BD calls every day make 15 because there’s gonna be some days that you don’t hit 10 and for whatever reason. I don’t know phone systems don’t work . I don’t know a public holiday tomorrow and everyone’s taken today off. Whatever it may be but always have some in your bank and everyone’s taken today off. Whatever it may be but always have some in your bank but what that’s going to do for you Liz it’s going to help you come become better at this.
So again whatever the KPIs are just hit them just do them. You will find if you do them and you do them consistently. You will build muscle in whatever the activity is so let’s call it the BD side again and you have 10 BD calls you have to make a day and you’re making 15 a day. Then that can only help you. It’s not gonna hurt you So when you when you’re talking about KPIs. This is your roadmap to success and look at it that way. Go to your boss and say to them. How do I actually achieve these things? I want to hit these targets how do I do it? If you’re struggling with them go to your boss and talk about it because they are seriously your roadmap to success and once you’ve hit them once and twice and three times and four times it becomes just a habit then so just keep on going and going and going and going and going. So Liz you have to have KPIs because they’re extremely important from a business perspective but they’re extremely important for you as well. And you need to look at them differently.
I hope that helps if and I hope it helps everybody else as well who has this hang up about this word KPIs. Don’t have the hangup it’s they are seriously there to help you.
