Ask Steve EP 8 – How do I get people to respond to my ads?

Hello everybody! Steve here from Recruitment School and welcome to another episode of Ask Steve.

And today our question comes from Harry who is based in Parramatta. How do I get people respond to my ads?

Great question, Harry! Very good question, actually I’m pretty sure what you’re trying to say Harry. Many people are complaining about lots and lots and lots of applicants but not necessarily the right people. So I’m gonna assume that Harry. I’m gonna assume that’s what you meant. Okay?

So let’s start with the ad itself. How are you writing your ad, Harry? How are you laying this ad out? Is it well thought through. Is it targeting the right people? Hey Harry, let’s start with this. What is your sourcing strategy. When it comes to finding people? Now, you can’t answer that for me right now and I can’t. I don’t know the answer but I’m going to assume I know what it is. I’m going to assume that you have primarily or you use primarily the post and pray recruitment strategy or sourcing strategy the post and pray recruitment sourcing strategy is this. We post an ad on the, on a job board and then we pray that somebody applies and I’m almost 100% certain based on your question that is your primary sourcing strategy. So my question is Harry. What else are you doing outside of this? You need more skill than just posting an ad on a job board a job board is a tool Harry. It is not the silver bullet. Yes. You will pick up some people from time to time and yes you will play some roles and yes it’s easy but it’s time Harry to move beyond the job board. By all means use the ad that’s on the job board but get it out to your database.

You know LinkedIn tells us through their document that they used to create it’s called the Ultimate List of statistics for Hiring Managers or something like that right? And based in that research and I can’t remember the number of people they so voted and these are global numbers but they’re still pretty cool numbers. They say that 87% of people who are employed at the moment are open to a new job. They’re open to a new job. They’re open to a conversation. They’re open to a coffee. They’re open to considering changing roles but only 30% of that 30% of those 87% are actively seeking which means they’re the ones that are on job boards. So the 70% of the 87% are not active. They’re passive they’re passive candidates. They’re out there and they’re interested in doing something but they don’t have time or or there’s not enough going on in their current job that they have to change today. Does that make sense? So your secret here Harry is to stop playing around with 30% and jump into the 70% because they’re the ones that are looking for you to contact them. So how do you get people to respond to your ads? Well first things first, write a good ad, Harry. Make sure it’s a good ad if it’s not a good ad, you got trouble because there’s a lot of competition out there. I’d say you’ve got to write a good ad that’s No. 1.

No. 2 structure it properly get the structure right. No. 3 once you’ve pushed the ad out, push it out to the rest of your database as well filtered Harry. You need to filter the database only the right people. Don’t just send it out blankets and oh, that’s too hard I don’t wanna do. I don’t wanna do all the searches and and find the actual people. I just send it everybody. That’s lazy, Harry. That is really lazy and by doing that you’ll actually destroy the database but you drive traffic to your own ad. You’re relying at the moment Harry on the traffic that is in the job board you’re not driving any of that traffic. You just relying on the traffic that’s in the job board Doesn’t make any sense? That’s like saying there’s a body of water there I’m gonna throw a fishing line in and catch some fish. It might be polluted water, we don’t know what it is but you’re relying just cause it’s a job board doesn’t necessarily mean your candidates are there. So drive your own traffic Harry and if you don’t know what I’m talking about the new Recruitment Ninja Program that we run talks all about this. Talks all about the in this sourcing lessons. It’s not available just yet. You’ll see it’s available cause there’ll be a lot of noise around it when it is available but jump in there and have a look at what we’re talking about.

But this is the problem Harry, you’re relying on the job board. First thing Harry is you have a post and pray recruitment strategy that you’ve implemented and it’s not working for you. So you need to go beyond that. Second thing is you’re relying on the job board traffic are you relying on whatever job board you use for people to… for that job board to advertise that they have jobs like yours out there, yeah. You relying on them do it. You’re thinking y’all just post a job and everything will fall into place and it doesn’t work like that, Harry. Doesn’t work like that. Drive your traffic. Drive your own traffic. I hope that helps Harry. I’m sorry I’ve been a little bit hard on you there but I hope that helps.
