Ask Steve EP 4 – How do I get Candidates to stop ghosting me?
Hello everybody!, Steve here from Recruitment School Welcome to Ask Steve!
Today we have a question from Joe, from Brisbane who is asking the question. How do I stop my candidates from ghosting me?
Great question, Joe! Really, Really good question. I actually don’t know if I know the answer to this one but let’s talk about it.
This ghosting concept is very common now and it’s not just you they’re ghosting. They’re ghosting everybody. They’re ghosting the doctor’s appointments, dental appointments, accountant appointments, dates obviously we hear that all the time. They’re ghosting airlines. They book a flight and don’t turn up. It’s happening all over the place. So if that’s the case I don’t know if we can actually solve it Joe.
I don’t know if that’s what the objective here is. I think the objective here Joe is… How do we work with people who are ghosting us. And the better question is, How do we identify who is the better ghoster? Over the people who aren’t. So if you’re in a heavy duty market. When I say heavy duty market at fast paced market with lots of competitors you will have a lot of ghosting because let’s face it as a candidate I am going to apply for not just your role Joe but many roles and the one that gets me quickest wins so one of the reasons why these people are ghosting you Joe is probably because you’re not quick enough. You’re not convincing them enough.
The more I think about it like Joe have you ever been fishing has anybody ever been fishing? Yeah, when you go fishing, you throw a line in into a body of water assuming that there’s fish there right? You don’t know if there’s fish. You might be able to see some or two, one or two but you don’t know right? You put some bait on a on a hook and you throw it out and you, you’re trying to catch a fish. When you’re fishing you’ll feel little bites on the line right? If you’ve ever done it you’ll feel it. You’ll feel it the line is on your finger and you can feel this little tugs like that, that’s something at the bottom of the ocean or the body of water tugging on your bait and then all of a sudden it grabs hold and it. It gets a hook in its mouth and that’s when you can feel the weight of the fish on the actual rod, right? Or the line.
If we swing that analogy now around to a candidate my question for you, Joe is, Are they on the line when you’re trying to close them? Have they taken the bait? Or you just trying to get your bums on seat? Is it a flick and stick type process because if they’re not on the line properly, they’re not gonna follow through and as we said before that they’re ghosting everybody so it doesn’t really matter that’s not a personal thing to you Joe. It’s just what I would be doing, Joe. Is trying to get him on the line more. Trying to get a commitment so there’s 952 million recruiters out there. There’s probably 552 of them in your space, million that is.
So you’ve got a lot of competition at the moment so you need to get them on the line so they have a vested interest in this thing. And it’s easy to say when I’m sitting on this side of the desk but that’s what I would be trying to do. I would be trying to get the stage that they are really really keen to chase his job that you’ve got so sell the role over.
Just make sure they get it and they understand it rather than just saying okay here’s a role are you interested. Yep I’m interested okay. Great I’ll put you forward and then you never hear from them again because they’re not on the line yet. So we need to make sure that they are on the line. Joe I think that’s what we can do so give that a crack, see how it goes give me feedback if you want and let me know how it goes.
