become a Recruiter

So you’re thinking of becoming a recruiter, here is why you should you become a recruiter?

We are a company called Recruitment School and we provide Online Recruitment Training that specialises in brand new people. We take people who can’t even spell recruitment and teach them all they need to know about recruitment -well all they need to know initially. So, we believe we are well suited to provide information on why you should become a recruiter.

First off, there are two types of professional recruiter, an Agency Recruiter and an In-house Recruiter.

Agency Recruitment

Recruitment Agencies are companies who find people for jobs. They do not find jobs for people. This is a very important element as they are the same words, but in a different order -and have a totally different meaning. Too many people out in the world think a recruitment agency recruiter is there to find them a job and they are not. They are there to make money for the agency and that money comes from the Employers, not the candidates.

Agency work is exciting and fast paced. depending on the company it may not be for the fait hearted – because it involves a lot of sales work. After in recruitment your have two clients that you need to please being the employer and the candidate. Thats why makes it so dynamic. In recruitment agency land, your days can change in heartbeat. You will get to meet all sorts of people and you people skills will go the the roof. It is a great industry and if you are prepared to push yourself, you can make a decent living out of it.

Internal/In-house Recruitment

An internal Recruiter works for one organisation or group of companies. Large organisations have their own internal recruitment functions so they can control the process and the cost of recruitment. In an internal role you may be asked to do a variety of roles from Receptionists to Engineers. An internal recruitment role is as the same as the Agency role however it doesn’t have the sales element. What it has in replace of the sales element is dealing with lots of internal hiring managers, which in basically sales in itself.

Your Market

If you are considering recruitment as a career, you need to think about the market you are going to specialise in. If you have a passion for fashion however the Fashion industry doesn’t recruit many people, then you will go broke pretty quickly. However if you have a passion for Tech stuff and you can pick up a gig recruiting in the Tech space, you will love it.

So try and find a role in the space your enjoy, or have an interest in.

How to get into Recruitment

If you know nothing about recruitment then you really should do some investment in yourself first. As mentioned before, the recruitment industry is fast paced and as a result training someone from brand new to experienced is a challenge for most Recruitment Managers – that is why we are here. So do your research.. Find as much as you can about recruitment before you start chasing your dream role. Use Recruitment School’s free resources and articles to get the language right. By doing this you at least differentiate yourself from those applying who haven’t.

Recruitment 2 Recruitment

This is subset of the industry called Recruitment 2 Recruitment Firms. They do recruitment for the recruitment industry. I know it sounds ridiculous however it’s real. They are called, Rec 2 Rec’s, or Rec 4 Rec’s. A simple Google Search for Rec 2 Rec in your area and you will find them. They will all be advertising on the main jobs boards in your area so you will be able to find them pretty easily.

Myths

So let’s address some of the myths and stories that you may of heard

  1. I have a friend who is making heaps of money in recruitment. Yes you can make an enormous amount of money in recruitment……….if you are amazing. The majority of people in recruitment do ok. Some do amazingly well. And then there are the few who smash it out of the park. Which one you are going to be is 100% up to you!
  2. I like the sound of finding people jobs – sounds like a good thing to do. The recruitment industry does not find people jobs. It finds people for jobs. They are the same words in a different order, and have a totally different meaning. Remember point above. The people who smash it out of the park become experts in their space and they know everything there is to know about their candidates.
  3. My friend in recruitment is always going out after work, they seem to have sooo much fun. The recruitment industry attracts “people people” and they are usually very social and outgoing so yes you will find yourself in a great group of people. However please remember that this is a hard gig. If you are not hitting your activity levels, this will result in you not achieving your budgets. If that happens, unfortunately you will not have the money to go out after work. The fun is a byproduct of hard work
  4. It doesn’t sound too hard, I’ll give it a go and see what happens. If you approach any sales role like this you will probably fail. This is hard core sales (especially in Agency) and you need to drive yourself to make it happen. Do not approach this industry with a laissez faire attitude. You need structure and discipline to make this work

Conclusion

If you want to make it in the recruitment industry, then you have to learn as much as you can about the industry. If you have that hunger, that desire to make it work, then go for it. Our choruses are here to help you with the knowledge. Your skill will be built over time. You cannot do a course and think thats it, Im a recruiter, it doesnt happen that way. Skilled Recruiters have finely tuned skills that enable them to read the people (hiring managers and candidates) well. They can tell if someone is not telling the truth just by the way the person stumbles. In time this can be you, but you have to put the work in. Recruitment NINJA™ is available to give you all the knowledge you need to get started and at $358 (+ gst for Australian students) you cant go wrong.

  1. Connie McGregor

Is this an appropriate site for me, a highschool outreach coordinator who is responsible to recruit new students?

    1. Hi Connie, thanks for reaching out. At Recruitment School we teach people how to recruit, no matter what they are recruiting, we can help. However you are the first person who has asked if we are suitable for someone like yourself. We traditionally work with recruitment/staffing agencies and small-medium businesses, who use our courses to find hard to find people for their organisation/s. I suppose you could use the same framework for recruiting students to your educational facility but we never have tried. Let’s connect and see what we can come up with. I will send you an email directly. Regards, Steve – CEO Recruitment School
